Botox/Dysport Pre-Treatment Guidelines

To minimize the risk of possible side effects and complications, please follow these steps:

BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT:

  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications, if possible, for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood-thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.

  • Schedule your Botox/ Dysport appointment at least 2 weeks prior to a special event that you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation. Results from the Botox/Dysport injections will take approximately 4 to 7 days to appear and can take up to 2 weeks to see full results. Bruising and swelling may be apparent at that time.

  • Discontinue Retin-A 2 days before and 2 days after treatment.

  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink before your procedure. This will decrease the chances of becoming lightheaded during your treatment.

  • You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Avoid taking aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®, Aleve®, Celebrex®, Fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E for 7-10 days prior to the procedure, as these may cause an increased risk of bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s). Regular multi-vitamins and Tylenol® are permitted (If not contraindicated).

  • Avoid alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to the procedure as this can increase the risk for bleeding and bruising at the treated site(s).

  • Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or the use of hair removal creams in the area(s) to be treated.

  • Take Tylenol® (if not contraindicated) 1 hour prior to your appointment to help with any discomfort you may have if you have concerns about discomfort.

  • Sunburn skin is difficult to treat so avoid exposure to the sun.

  • Eat a small meal or a snack before your appointment.

  • Always inform your doctor of all medications, including supplements you may be taking as well as your medical history.

PRECAUTIONS

You would not be considered a candidate for Botox/Dysport if you have any of the following:

  • Myasthenia Gravis

  • Allergy to Botulinum Toxin

  • Neuromuscular disorder

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Allergy to human albumin

Botox/Dysport Post-Treatment Guidelines

  • Exercise your treated muscles by performing 10 contractions every 15 minutes for three hours at injection sites. Typically, the movements used to take pictures prior to treatment will do. Scowling, smiling, and looking surprised are typically the most used muscle contractions of the face.

  • DO NOT rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours following treatment. Rubbing or massaging will cause the toxin to move or spread to unwanted areas and will cause undesired effects.

  • Do Not lie down or do strenuous exercise for three hours after treatment.

  • You may experience a headache and/or flu-like symptoms for approx. 24 - 48 hrs.

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be taken for relief only.

    • Do not take aspirin-containing products, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Vitamin E, or Fish oil for the next 24 hours. These agents may increase bruising/bleeding at the injection site.

  •  It is best to avoid alcohol intake beyond a single drink, glass of wine, or beer for approximately 24 hrs post- treatment.

  • The redness and marks on the treated areas will likely disappear within a few hours after treatment. There is a slight risk of bruising that may last up to one week. This is always temporary and can be treated with Arnica, which is available for purchase at most health food stores and is safe.

  • Botox®/Dysport® can take up to two weeks for full effect. If you feel that you would desire more relaxation of the muscles treated, we will address this at your two-week follow-up appointment.

  •  Results may vary. If a treated site is partially improved, and re-treatment is desired, a second treatment may be performed. There is a subsequent charge for any subsequent treatments.
